SWA Group’s Houston urban pollinators parklet / SWA Group
At greenscreen®, we like a celebration just as much as everyone else and this may be one that you aren’t familiar with. PARK[ing] Day is an annual open source global event where citizens, artists, architects, landscape architects and activists collaborate to temporarily transform parking spaces into temporary public places called parklets.
Founded in 2005 by landscape architecture firm Rebar, PARK[ing] Day demonstrates the value of designed public spaces, even ones that are just 130 square feet. PARK[ing] Day also shows just how much of our shared space has been taken over by cars — about 30 percent of the total surface of our built environment — and how many of those spaces could instead be used to strengthen local communities. Parklets in the past have help to raise awareness for community involvement, pollinators, climate change and in the case of California, drought.
On Friday, September 16th (PARK[ing] Day is always the third Friday in September), greenscreen® will be involved with three installations across the United States. Brian Vavrina of BV Associates, the greenscreen® manufacturing rep for the Mid Atlantic and Texas territories, will be in Annapolis with the Maryland Chapter of ASLA. Brian has been involved with their installation for a number of years and he likes celebrations probably more than everyone else!
If you have ever called into our Los Angeles office or have sent an email regarding a project to email@example.com, you have been communicating with Charlene, our outstanding Director of Customer Services. Charlene has coordinated with a group of landscape architects and architects for a PARK[ing] Day installation featuring greenscreen® in Nashville, TN. This group comprised from the local Kimley-Horn and Moody Nolan offices has put together some pretty interesting installations in the past and we are looking forward to their submittal that includes us! Here is their PARK[ing] Day installation from last year that won a Nashville Voters Choice Award .
The next greenscreen® installation is Orlando, FL in conjunction with the Orlando Section of the Florida Chapter of ASLA (FLASLA). The Orlando Section has been organizing and working on their PARK[ing] Day since March with support from the College Park Partnership. On August 11th, they held a design workshop with local enthusiasts and interested business owners as a lead in to the event. The workshop included a demonstration parklet that will be used by the Orlando Section in September.
The theme for the parklet is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reinvent” and a salvaged greenscreen® panel from a recently renovated installation was used as a freestanding screen to separate the parklet from adjacent parking spaces.
So, mark Friday, September 16th on your calendar and check your city for PARK[ing] Day events! greenscreen® looks forward to seeing what everyone else is doing and we’ll make sure to provide you with a recap of the projects that we are involved with.
